In coordination with one of our distributor partners, Harrington Industrial Plastics, Jacobs Engineering enlisted VPC’s expertise to design a 36-inch Fiberglass Parshall Flume for Intel’s cutting-edge chip manufacturing plant in Johnstown, Ohio. The challenge was creating a versatile fiberglass flume capable of measuring flow and water quality parameters while addressing specific site processes that posed a potential for periodic submergence.
To overcome the challenge, VPC implemented a comprehensive design featuring:
- Flow-Measuring Accessories: Equipped the flume with flow-measuring accessories at both the Ha and Hb points to ensure accurate flow measurements even during periods of submergence.
- Turbulence Mitigation: Integrated two stilling wells and dual-sided connections for instrumentation on both the left and right sides to address unforeseen turbulence.
- Enhanced Infrastructure: Implemented grating along the entire Parshall Flume channel for improved functionality. Additionally, a custom-built sump in the diverging section’s end adapter facilitated the installation of a sampling pump, enhancing overall infrastructure capabilities.

The customized design not only met the specific requirements of Intel’s manufacturing plant but also demonstrated VPC’s capability to provide innovative solutions for complex challenges. The successful collaboration resulted in an expertly engineered, customized flume that effectively measures both flow and water quality parameters given the conditions at the site.
